Project Overview

CivicChain is a decentralized identity and transparent payment verification system built on the Cardano blockchain. It is designed to formalize Nigeria’s informal economy by giving traders, drivers, artisans, and gig workers a verifiable digital identity (DID) and an on-chain payment history they control.

By integrating Atala PRISM for identity and Cardano metadata for payment traceability, CivicChain creates a unified trust infrastructure that enables financial inclusion, transparent revenue collection, and fraud-proof aid distribution.

Problem Statement

Nigeria’s informal economy represents over 57% of national GDP, yet millions of its participants remain financially invisible.

They lack:

  • Digital identity
  • Verifiable payment records
  • Access to credit or insurance
  • Protection from corrupt revenue collection
  • Transparent channels to receive humanitarian aid

Current systems rely on manual cash collections, paper-based tracking, and unverifiable receipts. This results in:

  • Revenue leakage for governments
  • Ghost beneficiaries for NGOs
  • High-risk perception by banks
  • Lifetime financial exclusion for citizens

Informal workers contribute daily to the economy but are denied recognition, creditworthiness, and accountability because no traceable record of their economic activities exists.

Solution Summary

CivicChain links every informal worker to a Decentralized Identity (DID) and ensures that every payment, levy, permit, or relief fund disbursement is verifiable, traceable, and tamper-proof on the Cardano blockchain.

The platform provides:

  • DID Creation & Ownership: Citizens own secure digital identities independent of centralized databases
  • Transparent Revenue Verification: Each payment creates a blockchain-recorded, QR-verifiable receipt
  • Verifiable Credentials: Market unions, cooperatives, and associations issue trusted credentials linked to the DID
  • Financial Inclusion: Users build on-chain financial history that banks and microfinance institutions can verify for loans or insurance
  • Humanitarian Aid Traceability: NGOs and government agencies can send relief funds directly to verified DIDs, eliminating fraud and ghost beneficiaries
  • Optional Staking-as-Collateral: Users can stake ADA to strengthen creditworthiness

CivicChain replaces opaque, corrupt systems with a transparent, inclusive, and auditable identity-payment network for Nigeria’s informal economy.

Target Community

CivicChain is built specifically for individuals and institutions operating within Nigeria’s informal economy, including:

Primary Beneficiaries:

  • Market traders
  • Artisans and craftsmen
  • Commercial drivers and transport workers
  • Gig economy workers
  • Street vendors
  • Small cash-based businesses

Institutional Stakeholders:

  • Local governments and revenue officers
  • Market unions and cooperatives
  • NGOs and humanitarian organizations
  • Microfinance banks and insurance providers

These communities face daily challenges of financial invisibility, unverified payments, corrupt collection processes, and exclusion from essential financial services. CivicChain delivers the tools they need to be recognized, trusted, and financially empowered.
