Local Evaluation Process

Location: Next Trend Hub, Lagos
Evaluating: All 13 teams (65 participants)

Overview

The local evaluation determines which 3-4 teams from Next Trend Hub will:

  • Receive local ADA prizes (500/300/200 ADA)
  • Advance to continental evaluation
  • Compete for Top 5 global prizes

Judging Panel

Panel Composition

  • Next Trend Hub Leadership (2-3 judges)
  • Local Mentors (2-3 judges)
  • Community Representatives (1-2 judges)
  • Technical Expert (1 judge, optional)

Total: 5-8 judges

Judge Roles

  • Review all team documentation pages
  • Watch December 13 presentations (recorded or live)
  • Score teams using evaluation criteria
  • Deliberate to select winners
  • Provide feedback to teams

Scoring Process

Step 1: Independent Scoring (Jan 1-5)

Each judge reviews all 13 teams independently:

  1. All 7 team documentation pages
  2. Voice notes (sample 3-5 per team)
  3. Prototype/solution (if accessible)
  4. Presentation deck or video (from Dec 13)

Scoring Sheet: Each judge scores teams on 6 criteria (100 points total)

Step 2: Score Aggregation (Jan 6 morning)

  • Average scores across all judges
  • Identify top contenders
  • Note any major score discrepancies (discuss in deliberation)

Step 3: Panel Deliberation (Jan 6 afternoon)

Deliberation Process:

  1. Review aggregated scores
  2. Discuss top 5-6 teams
  3. Address score discrepancies
  4. Consider qualitative factors:
    • Quality of community research
    • Authenticity of journey
    • Team effort and collaboration
    • Potential for continued development

Decision Criteria:

  • Top 3 teams clear (if less than 150 participants)
  • Top 4 teams if 150+ participants (Next Trend Hub has 65, so Top 3)

Step 4: Winner Announcement (Jan 6 evening)

  • Announce via Next Trend Hub channels
  • Notify teams individually
  • Share feedback summaries
  • Announce prize distribution

Next Trend Hub (65 participants = 13 teams):

🥇 1st Place: 500 ADA
🥈 2nd Place: 300 ADA
🥉 3rd Place: 200 ADA

Total Local Pool: 1,000 ADA

All 3 winners advance to continental evaluation.

What Judges Look For

Ground Truth Quality (25 points)

Strong Evidence:

  • 10-15+ voice notes per team
  • Diverse interviewee profiles
  • Specific quotes and examples
  • Clear documentation

Weak Evidence:

  • Few voice notes (less than 10)
  • Homogenous sample
  • Vague summaries
  • Missing links

Insight Formulation (15 points)

Strong Analysis:

  • Clear themes from data
  • Root cause identification
  • Pattern recognition
  • Superior interests defined

Weak Analysis:

  • Superficial patterns
  • No root cause analysis
  • Jumping to solutions
  • Ignoring contradictions

Hypothesis Clarity (10 points)

Strong Hypothesis:

  • Specific target audience
  • Measurable problem
  • Root cause stated
  • Testable prediction

Weak Hypothesis:

  • Vague audience
  • Unmeasurable outcome
  • No root cause
  • Actually a solution statement

Opportunity Definition (10 points)

Strong Exploration:

  • 3-5 options considered
  • Evaluation criteria clear
  • Scoring matrix used
  • Trade-offs acknowledged

Weak Exploration:

  • Only one option
  • No justification
  • Ignoring feasibility
  • Copying existing products

Solution Quality (25 points)

Strong Solution:

  • Functional prototype
  • Addresses validated problem
  • Usable by target audience
  • Evidence of testing

Weak Solution:

  • Broken or incomplete
  • Doesn’t match hypothesis
  • Unusable interface
  • No testing done

Impact Potential (15 points)

Strong Impact:

  • Clear scale (how many people)
  • Significant improvement
  • Sustainability plan
  • Community validation

Weak Impact:

  • Vague benefit claims
  • Minimal improvement
  • Not sustainable
  • No validation

Feedback Process

After winners announced:

All Teams Receive:

  • Score summary (aggregate, not individual judge scores)
  • Written feedback (2-3 paragraphs)
  • Strengths identified
  • Areas for improvement

Winners Receive:

  • Detailed feedback for continental competition
  • Suggestions for strengthening submission
  • Connection to CATS/WADA resources

Appeals Process

No formal appeals, but:

  • Teams can request clarification on feedback
  • Hub leadership available for questions
  • Scores are final once announced

Continental Advancement

Top 3 teams automatically advance to:

  • Continental evaluation pool
  • Compete with Top 3-4 from all other hubs
  • Judged by CATS/WADA panel
  • Eligible for Top 5 global prizes
